For a true luxury handbag experience, look no further than Chanel’s Success Story set. Released alongside the 2019/2020 Métiers d’Art collection, this unique set consists of a quilted leather trunk that opens up to reveal four mini Chanel bags. This rare collector’s piece is for the true Chanel aficionado, expertly combining the old and new into a set that is both off-beat and elegant.
Chanel creative director Viriginie Viard described the 2019/2020 Métiers d’Art collection as “the things we like, a mix of Karl and Chanel – the codes.” The limited edition Success Story trunk certainly combines the Chanel codes, bringing every era of the iconic brand together to create something new. The quilted leather trunk opens like a jewelry box, complete with a mirror on the lid’s interior. Four tiny Chanel bags are nestled inside – the 2.55, the Classic Flap, the Boy bag, and the Gabrielle. Each of these bags represents a distinct period in Chanel’s history.
The 2.55 bag was created by Coco Chanel in 1955. Unlike many luxury bags at the time, the 2.55 had a long shoulder strap rather than a structured top handle. Each piece of the 2.55 bag is a reference to Chanel’s personal history – just the chain strap is thought to have been inspired by chain link used to hem Chanel jackets, by equestrian tack, or by the belts worn by the nuns at Chanel’s orphanage. The 2.55 bag became a jumping off point for the brand, inspiring countless other designs, the most obvious being the Classic Flap bag.
The Chanel Classic Flap bag was designed by Karl Lagerfeld when he became creative director in the 1980s. Lagerfeld kept the basic structure of the 2.55, but made several key changes. The 2.55’s Mademoiselle lock (named for Chanel never marrying) was replaced by the now iconic CC logo turn lock, playing up the branding. The chain link strap was also replaced with a chain interwoven with leather. Different versions of the Classic Flap bag are released every year. The Classic Flap in this set is crafted from quilted lambskin, another instantly recognizable brand signature.
The Boy bag, which debuted in Chanel’s 2011 Fall/Winter collection is another Lagerfeld creation. Named for Arthur “Boy” Capel, one of Coco Chanel’s lovers, the Boy bag has a masculine silhouette and a chunky Gourmette chain strap. The mini Boy bag in this Success Story set features gunmetal hardware, adding to the already edgy look of this bag.
The Gabrielle bag is the newest of the bunch, introduced for Chanel’s Spring 2017 collection. Lagerfeld was inspired by virtual reality glasses, giving the bag a modern feel. Named for Chanel herself, the Gabrielle bag keeps the brand codes intact, with a long interwoven chain strap and dangling CC logo emblem. This mini Gabrielle bag is crafted from tweed, another Chanel classic. Coco Chanel first introduced her tweed suit in 1924, inspired by masculine sportswear. Tweed is now synonymous with Chanel’s femininity, and is a welcome textural addition to this set.
